“Those who are in their sixties have become so much more concerned with their health and well being. This is because many diseases are age related but the gravity depends on your way of life. Below are a few health concerns that are common with people of the age of sixty.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that makes our bones brittle, thin and easily broken. The most serious consequences of osteoporosis are hip fractures and of all older adults who suffer from hip fracture. Around 20 percent are dead in a year according to a study.

Regular exercise, calcium supplements, good nutrition and taking proper medications should be practiced to increase thickness of bones, making them strong and less fragile. A bone density check can be done to check if you have risks of having osteoporosis.

Short-term memory

The brain no longer works as efficiently as it used to so misplacing items or forgetting things shouldn’t be a reason to panic because it is normal as we grow old. But sooner or later, most older adults remember.

Even so, you should mention it to your doctor since if it is something that needs medical attention, it’s much better to find the causes early to prevent permanent damage. Health problems that cause malfunctions of the short-term memory are vitamin deficiencies, depression, thyroid disorder or, in worst cases, dementia. With dementia, there is a 10 percent chance that the damage is reversible with early diagnosis.

Urinary urgency

This occurs in 16 percent of men and 17 percent of women of all ages. The risks gets higher as we age. We can prevent this with the use of behavioral modification techniques, physical therapy, medications and, if all else fails, surgical procedures. There are now many surgical procedures developed to treat urinary incontinence.

Loss of sexual desire

Men might not be as interested in sex as they were 20 years ago because of erectile dysfunction caused by low levels of the hormone, testosterone. Men and women, both, have this problem if they have diabetes, depression, a thyroid disorder or it can also be a side effect to several medications. Address this concern by mentioning it to your doctor because this could also be a sign of serious health problems.

Pay regular visits to your doctor and live a healthy lifestyle. You need to stay healthy not only for yourself but of course for those who care for you. Get a Medigap supplementary insurance so you’ll never have to worry about paying off those hospital bills when your basic Medicare isn’t sufficient.
