Drug Problems

You have an alcohol problem if your use of alcohol interferes with your health or daily living. You develop alcoholism if you physically or emotionally depend on alcohol to get you through your day.

Alcohol abuse patterns vary. Some people get drunk every day; others drink large amounts of alcohol at specific times, such as on the weekend. It is common for someone with an alcohol or drug problem to call in sick for work on Monday or Friday. He or she may complain of having a virus or the flu. Others may be sober for long periods and then go on a drinking binge that lasts for weeks or months.

Someone with alcohol dependence may suffer serious withdrawal symptoms, such as trembling, delusions, hallucinations, and sweating, if he or she stops drinking suddenly ("cold turkey"). Once alcohol dependence develops, it becomes very difficult to stop drinking without outside help. Medical detoxification may be needed.

Drugs

Drugs like ecstasy (MDMA), ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol, and LSD, which are known as "club drugs," may be found at all-night dances, raves, trances, or clubs. Club drug use accounts for increasing numbers of drug overdoses and emergency room visits. Inhalants like nitrous oxide may also be used at these clubs. Drugs come in different forms and can be used in different ways. They can be smoked, snorted, inhaled, taken as pills, put in liquids or food, put in the rectum or the vagina, or injected with a needle. Teens and young adults may be at risk for becoming victims of sexual assault or violent behavior in situations where these drugs are used.

Some nonprescription medicines, such as cold medicines that have dextromethorphan as an ingredient, are being abused by teens and young adults as a way to get a "high."

alcoholism

Alcoholism
Written by Dr Dan Rutherford, GP
If you feel you can't function without a drink, seek help.
Alcoholic drinks have been prepared and drunk for thousands of years, and the problems that can accompany excess alcohol intake have undoubtedly been around just as long. Friend or foe?High levels of alcohol consumption can lead to physical illness and psychological and social distress. Alcohol has therefore always had an ambivalent position in society. In moderation, it can be the oil that makes a social occasion go with a bit more flow or helps a shy person overcome their inhibitions. Small, regular amounts of alcohol also seem to have a positive effect on the heart and circulation. But too much alcohol is often a recipe for disaster. The increasing use of alcohol, along with other drugs of abuse, is a serious public health problem across all age ranges, but especially so in the young. What is alcohol dependence?
CAGE questionnaire
The ‘CAGE’ questionnaire is a short list of questions that can indicate if alcohol dependence is a possibility.
Two or more positive answers to these questions suggests dependence.
Have you ever:
thought you should Cut down on your drinking?
felt Annoyed by others criticising your drinking?
felt bad or Guilty about your drinking?
had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover? (Eye-opener.)
Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence is a medical term with a deliberately more precise meaning than the problems that can occur, sometimes as one-offs, through an uncharacteristic binge. In alcohol dependence a number of features come together in the behaviour of the person affected.
Drinking begins to take priority over other activities. It becomes a compulsion.
Tolerance develops, so it takes more alcohol to produce drunkenness.
Withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and tremor develop after a short period without a drink, and are reduced by taking more alcohol.Often alcohol dependence remains undetected for years. Both the availability of alcohol and the way it is used (the social patterns) appear to be major factors in influencing the likelihood of a person becoming alcohol dependent. There may also be a genetic component, because alcohol dependence clusters in some families. However, it’s hard to be sure that this is not because of learned behaviour. What problems are caused by too much alcohol? Excess alcohol can lead to health problems including
depression
liver cirrhosis
heart failure
damage to the brain and nervous system.Along the way there is often damage to relationships, finances and jobs and problems with the law. Mental health and alcoholismMental health problems are common with alcoholism. Each can lead to or reinforce the other. Depression is a common cause of alcoholism as the depressed person seeks a way out of their problems or a relief from insomnia. Unfortunately, alcohol is itself a depressant, so the problem is only compounded. Anxiety can be temporarily relieved by alcohol, but this may lead to repeated intake and dependence. Without adequate attention to the mental health needs of a person with alcohol dependence, little progress will be made. Often alcoholism remains unsuspected even by the doctor, and it may come to light only when medical tests are done for other reasons. Treating alcoholismThe difficulty of treating alcoholism should not be minimised – it can be very hard, even with support from family, friends and your GP. However, there are a a number of steps you can take including not drinking alcohol on weekdays.

drug addiction

Selecting a treatment center for alcoholism and drug abuse for yourself or someone you care about may be one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime. Most of us don't know what to look for in a quality program. Not all treatment centers are the same-they differ greatly in program options, staff qualifications, credentials, cost, and effectiveness. You need to ask appropriate questions when you call a drug abuse treatment center for information and you should expect to receive clear answers. Before you make any decisions-ask questions and get the facts!
Does the treatment center offer a variety of drug addiction programs?
Alcohol and
drug addiction is a disease that progresses through predictable stages. It takes a trained health professional, often a doctor specializing in addiction medicine, to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the most appropriate treatment.
Centers should offer a variety of treatment programs that meet individual needs. Programs may include inpatient, residential, outpatient, and/or short-stay options.
The difference between inpatient and residential treatment is that inpatient services are provided by a licensed hospital, while residential programs usually do not meet the same rigorous standards of medical care.
The length of stay depends on the severity and stage of the disease.
What does treatment cost?
"How much does it cost?" is often one of the first questions asked.
The price tag for drug abuse & alcoholism is presented in many different formats. You need to know what is included in the price, what will be added on to your bill as a fee-for-service program, and what services your health insurance will cover. This makes it extremely difficult to compare prices by simply asking the question - "What does it cost?"
If you are seeking the best value for your treatment dollar, remember: Price can be meaningful only in the context of quality and performance.
Is the treatment program medically based?
There is an advantage to including on-site medical care in a drug abuse treatment center. Physicians and nurses provide 24-hour hospital services to monitor and ensure a safe withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. In addition, a medical staff specializing in addiction medicine can oversee the progress of each individual and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
Medical credentials can also be important. For example, chemical dependency treatment centers that earn a JCAHO accreditation (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) meet national standards for providing quality medical care. Appropriate state licensing is also an important consideration.
Be sure to ask which medical costs are included in the price of treatment.
What is the degree of family involvement in the recovery program?
Drug abuse and alcoholism affects the entire family, not just the alcoholic/addict. Quite often family members do not realize how deeply they have been affected by chemical dependency. Family involvement is an important component of recovery.
Treatment centers vary in the degree and quality of family involvement opportunities. Some offer just a few lectures and others offer family therapy. Ask if there is any time devoted to family programs and if group therapy is included.
Does treatment include a quality continuing care program?
There are no quick fixes for the diseases of drug abuse and alcoholism. Recovery is an ongoing process. The skills one learns during intensive treatment must be integrated into everyday life and this takes time.
Some treatment programs will offer a follow-up program but only in one location which may make it difficult to use.
Treatment programs should include a quality, continuing care program that supports and monitors recovery.

Alcoholism & effects of alcoholism on health & family
The consequences of alcohol abuse are serious and in many cases, life-threatening. Alcoholism greatly increases the likelihood of a death or injury, to the driver or anyone near them, from car crashes, other vehicle accidents, and on-the-job accidents. Not to mention the increased occurrence of domestic violence, homicide and suicide. It is estimated that alcohol-related problems costs the American economy approximately $100 billion per year. In purely human terms, the suffering is incalculable.Alcoholism has little to do with how long someone has been drinking or how much they drink. It to do with a person's uncontrollable need for alcohol. This definition of alcoholism helps us understand why most alcoholics can't just "use a little willpower" to stop drinking. He or she is frequently in the grip of a powerful craving for alcohol, a need that can feel as strong as the need for food or water. Most people abusing alcohol need counseling and support to recover from the disease. With treatment many individuals are able to quit drinking and rebuild their lives.

Addiction or dependency on drugs such as methamphetamine, crack, cocaine, pot, ecstasy, ketamine and other stimulants and depressants, as well as pain killers such as OxyContin, Vicodin, Lortab, and other opioids is a major problem that can personally affect not only the lives of the men and women taking them, but their family, friends, and even coworkkers.People who start using pain killers for good reason can become physically dependent on them. Drug addiction can become a chronic problem, which can damage one's most important relationships, and even one's own personal health. For people who have a dual diagnosis, meaning they have an underlying issue such as depression, treatment can be challenging. While some people are aware of the damage that their drug abuse causes, they often need counseling services or an intensive drug rehab program to overcome their addiction. Most often, help in achieving recovery from substance abuse requires addiction treatment in a residential or outpatient drug rehab program, participation in a 12-step program, plus support from friends and family.

drug rehab

Welcome to Drug Rehab

Our drug rehab program is the most effective rehabilitation program available today. An amazing 76% of our graduates choose to remain drug-free and become productive members of society. The drug rehab program at Narconon is backed by a solid Graduate Assurance Plan such that if any graduate of our program following their approved discharge plan relapses within 6 months of graduating, we will re-admit them at no charge!

Our success rate is so much higher than other alcohol and drug rehab programs simply because we use a unique 4-phase approach to completely rehabilitate the drug addict and the desire to use drugs as an escape in the first place;

Program DescriptionThe cornerstone of our approach to drug rehabilitation is our Sauna Based Detox Program. Street drugs, prescription drugs, alcohol and other drugs can remain in the body for years. These residues can trigger a variety of symptoms, including drug cravings and depression. An exact program of medically supervised exercise, dry sauna sweating and vitamins, rid fatty tissues of these residues. The result is the person no longer experiences the adverse effects of the drugs they have taken in the past. (click image for more information.)

Following the Detox Program, Effective Educational Therapies are used to restore the former addict's ability to focus on real life goals and to return a level of self-control to the individual. This greatly improves the former addicts' ability to face the realities of life and reduce the need for drugs to escape the difficulties of life.

In order to further improve the life skills of the former addict, Additional Educational Therapies are used to rehabilitate their self-esteem. Often, an addict commits harmful acts, both to themselves and their loved ones, that traps them into further drug use. After completing this phase of the program, the student has a restored sense of self-worth and finds it much easier to confront life problems

.

The final phase is a comprehensive long-term Discharge Program designed to assist the student through the first year of recovery. This is accomplished through regular contact with the student and family members. This creates the ideal situation that facilitates the effective re-introduction of the individual back into society and leading a new drug free life. We not only teach people how to stay away from drugs, but how to live happy and successful lives so that there is no longer any desire to use drugs. Many of Our Successful Graduates experience a re-birth into a new life of renewed hope after completing our Program (see testimonials to right).

30 acre drug rehab campusOur 30 acre drug rehab campus is a comfortable and casual retreat aimed at healing and appropriate for all ages. Our students are treated with respect and are allowed to be themselves. We don’t just get people off drugs, we bring them back to the way they were BEFORE THEY EVER STARTED TAKING DRUGS. (Click image to enlarge)

We don’t believe that people magically get better in 28 days. Those 28 day programs were created because that's what insurance companies would cover. Our program allows students to move at their own pace and fully complete the program in 3 to 6 months. This approach has proven to be much more effective at bringing the former addict back into being a loving member of the family and a productive member of society.

The cost of our drug rehab program is extremely competitive. We offer our all-inclusive experience for one flat rate. This includes all in-facility living expenses, medical assistance costs, educational materials and drug detox expenses for whatever period of time is required for you or your loved one to fully complete our unique drug rehabilitation program. We can also bill insurance companies directly and offer easy financing options.

You owe it to yourself to find out what this drug rehab program has to offer you.

Drug Rehab Program

Results are the Key

Our Drug Rehab FacilityIn these times of failing drug treatment programs we deliver unmatched results. These results are documented by many social research groups.

  • An independent Spanish study done by 'Tecnicos Asociados de Investigacion y Marketing' showed that 70% of our drug and alcohol rehab center graduates stayed off drugs.
  • An independent American study reported that 86% of were still off drugs two years after completing their program.

Our graduates are left with no urge to relapse and no need to be put on any other medication in order to make them stable. Our graduates are brought back to life with confidence, control and the ability to achieve their life goals without drugs.

For millions of individuals personally caught up in the trap of drug addiction or alcoholism, and the many others who are also directly or indirectly affected, our drug and alcohol rehab centers provide a real and workable route back to the full freedom from drug addiction.

The Program

joe 1The program is packaged in a series of standardized steps which are done in an exact sequence. The drug-free detox program removes the residual drugs from the body greatly decreasing the chance of relapse. The learning programs help the individual gradually withdraw from drug abuse, get involved again with their family and society, gain control of themselves and reach the point where they can actually take responsibility for themselves and others as well. The program also addresses and handles the reason why the individual started using drugs in the first place and gives them the knowledge and certainty they need to lead a long and happy, drug-free life.

The program takes as long as it takes to get results. There is no fixed time limit. Many of our successful graduates complete this program in 3-6 months. This result is provided at a fixed cost, no matter how long it takes to free the addict from drug abuse. This is a key element that separates this program from all others that are designed to only accomodate standard insurance coverage.

Another critical element of this program is that the detoxification approach does not use any drugs. Too often, a generic "rehab" may cure the addict from one addiction only to give them another. The goal of this program is very simple: to afford the graduate a long term, drug free life of hope and promise. This is simply the one thing that we are all granted in life and exactly what drugs denied the addict.
