O.C. alcohol, drug rehab center closes

South Coast Recovery, a licensed alcohol and drug treatment and detox program, 205 Avenida Fabricante in San Clemente, has closed.

The facility with several houses in which clients lived while going through the 90-day treatment had about 45 employees.

Calls to the center’s local number automatically go to Morningside Recovery in Newport Beach. Register phone calls to owner Dennis Larkin have not been returned.

Former employees said that all remaining staff was laid off on Oct. 7, although some are remaining as unpaid volunteers to help until clients are relocated to other facilities.

Larkin reportedly started South Coast Recovery in 1994.

Here’s how the program is described on the South Coast Recovery website:

“Here, 12-step meetings meet on the beach and at the Dana Point Harbor steps from the shore. It’s not unusual to find yourself sitting next to a Grammy-award winning singer or a local artist whose work is on display at a gallery down the street in Laguna Beach. At SouthCoast Recovery, we believe it’s important for our clients to experience as much of the local California flavor as possible during alcohol and drug treatment. Past excursions have included trips to the beach or L.A. studios for reality show tapings. We’ve even chartered a boat for Albacore tuna fishing.”

The California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs is looking into the closure.
