Drug Rehab - Australian Authorities Report Dangerous Party Drugs

A world MDMA shortage has encourage manufacturers of the party drug ecstasy to start cutting their product with levimisole, a drug used to prevent worms in cattle. Levimisole is commonly used to cut other drugs such as heroin and cocaine. The combination of ecstasy and levimisole is particularly dangerous, according to Australian authorities who have reported seeing the drug more frequently in recent months.

MDMA is already a dangerous drug that can cause brain damage, seizures, dehydration, and other medical complications. Added unknown drugs into the mix creates an even more unpredictable situation. People taken what they believe to be ecstasy could have very little MDMA in it. Instead, they could be purchasing a much more dangerous substance.

This has led some protesters to argue in favor of drug legalization. Legalizing drugs such as MDMA, marijuana, and cocaine would allow the government to regulate manufacturers and distributors, which would prevent deaths caused by tainted drugs.
Most drug enforcement agencies around the world, however, have a different perspective on this situation. They believe that the increased risk makes it even more imperative to keep drugs off the street. That way, no one will have to suffer the damaging effects of pure or tainted drugs.
While pure drugs are potentially safer than those cut with unknown chemicals, it is naive to think that pure MDMA, heroin, or cocaine are benevolent substances. In some cases, purer forms of these substance would just lead to a higher number of overdoses, especially among populations who are used to purchasing heavily diluted drugs.

The approach to solving the problem of tainted drugs, however, isn’t the same for all types of substances. Cocaine and heroin are abused much more frequently than ecstasy, which is largely reserved as a party drug and not taken daily. Preventing deaths from tainted ecstasy likely requires educational programs that teach children and adults about the dangers of street drugs. Those who frequently abuse drugs like heroin and cocaine, however, need more than just education. They also need rehab to help them overcome their addictions.
